Description

Rich-text is responsible for a fair number of errors:

  • Using it slows down some screen readers, including Jaws. The lag can be quite noticeable.
  • Using it can freeze the window for some screen readers. Jaws and NVDA have been mentioned. The history just doesn't update properly, though the screen does.
  • Under Linux, the rich text seems to generate some additional errors, as if the cursor position were always hard to find and gave out illogical numbers at times.

For these reasons, it would be better if rich-text were disabled by default. A welcome dialog could possibly be added to display a warning, to invite users to activate it if they don't use a screen reader. For the time being, however, most users need screen reader accessibility.
